Five Apps Fight Through Six Rounds, With No Participation Trophies

Short-drama apps ceased to be a niche curiosity some time ago. For Q1 2025, Sensor Tower counted about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category, with the US generating 49% of it. Roughly $2.8–3B was the figure for full-year 2025, and the quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M by Found a Homeless Genius to Save My Company drama Q1 2026. ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave are the five names that lead the conversation, and any shopper who has searched a store for a short reels app has come across at least one of them. On the surface, the apps look identical, offering vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. What you pay and where you can watch hinge on how they differ beneath the surface, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras. Six rounds, one winner per round: that is the format, and we relied on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.

The Big Comparison Grid

The whole field sits on one screen here, before the rounds begin. As of September 2026, the prices are the figures shown in the US App Store, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. All market shares are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Install counts come from each app’s Google Play listing. A cell that says « not reported » means no reliable source published the figure; we would rather leave a gap than guess. Read the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Who Owns Them and How Big They Are

Being the incumbent, ReelShort still carries the most weight. Crazy Maple Studio, based in Sunnyvale and backed by China’s COL Group, launched it in August 2022, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. For 2026, MPA forecasts $1.05B, following 2025 revenue of $785M. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and holds about 21%. Sensor Tower had ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M in Q1 2025, but by Q1 2026 the two were even at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave, often mistyped as « dreamwave », is the youngest app here, yet it already commands about 13% and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. My Drama, the minnow with 5M+ Android installs, is nonetheless the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. GoodShort, for context, holds about 6% and sits just outside this lineup. Winner: ReelShort, by a narrow margin, on market share.

Round 2: Pricing

The apps seem most alike in this round. Each of ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave offers a weekly pass at around $19.99 in the US App Store, and every one renews automatically. On top of that, ShortMax lists a $9.99 « Weekly Pass Pro », and DramaWave’s weekly VIP begins at $7.99. Going a different route, DramaBox offers auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass come to about $80, so a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Country, platform and promotion all affect prices, so the number on your screen may be different. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin.

Round 3: Free Ways to Watch

When it comes to free viewing, the marketing gets loud and the details grow thin. ReelShort’s own blog states that one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes and that the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free. Checking in seven days in a row brings 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Official ReelShort channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion are the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying. Do not treat look-alike sites, modded APKs or « unlimited coins » generators as a safe shortcut; they are unofficial, so keep away. Free options exist on DramaBox too, though its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Winner: clearly ReelShort.

Round 4: Devices and Platforms

Screens are where these apps really diverge. ReelShort covers iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it also streams in a browser at reelshort.com with progress that syncs across devices. The ShortMax domain forwards to the ShortTV website, so ShortMax offers web browsing as well. DramaBox’s website mostly points you back to the app, and DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps. Thanks to an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show, My Drama plays the trump card. Any of the five will do if a shorts app on your phone is all you need. Winner: ReelShort overall, with My Drama claiming the living room.

Round 5: Library and Originals

ShortMax is unbeatable on raw numbers. The app claims 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages; as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, mostly dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly relies on AI for more than 80% of its newly released content. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. For its part, DramaBox brings an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. The most intriguing pipeline belongs to My Drama, since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years. Winner: ShortMax, on sheer volume.

Round 6: Extras and Fine Print

DramaWave runs away with this one. Offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video all appear in its App Store listing, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. The next most useful perk, for viewers who switch between phone and laptop, is ReelShort’s cross-device sync. And take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. Under ShortMax’s terms, refunds are not given « unless the paid product/service is unusable », and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Always cancel in App Store or Google Play settings, because on any of these apps deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. Round winner: DramaWave.

The Final Picks: Best For

Because no single short drama app wins every round, the right choice comes down to how you watch. For Apple TV, My Drama is best: it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. ReelShort is best for web viewing, thanks to a full browser player and progress that travels with you between devices. For commuters and steady bingers, DramaWave is best, combining offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. ShortMax is best for pure volume, since its claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid. If you want to back the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. When it comes to free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort is once again best, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Pick one if you are tempted by all five, then cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
